Bushy, rather untidy, large shrub or small tree commonly 3–5 m high, sometimes 6–7 (–9) m high, occasionally prostrate. Branchlets often pendulous, yellowish, glabrous. Phyllodes commonly pendulous, variable, linear to lanceolate, sometimes narrowly obovate, 7–25 (–30) cm long, 7–30 (–40) mm wide, ± thin, light green, glabrous, prominently 1‑veined, penniveined; glands 2, with lowermost prominent, 0–3 mm above pulvinus, and uppermost smaller and at base of mucro. Inflorescences terminal or axillary 2–11-headed racemes, with secondary phyllode sometimes developed at base of peduncles; raceme axes to 10 cm long, robust, glabrous, subtended when very young by bracts; peduncles 5–20 (–25) mm long, robust, glabrous; heads globular, large, subdense, 25–50-flowered, white to cream, not showy. Flowers 5-merous; calyx united, ±truncate or sinuate-toothed. Pods submoniliform, breaking readily at constrictions, to 11.5 cm long, 4–6 mm wide, ± woody, glabrous. Seeds longitudinal, oblong, 5–6.5 mm long, ± shiny, greyish brown to black; aril scarlet.

A small tree. The bark is smooth and grey. The branches hang down and the small branches often have a zigzag fashion. These are without hairs and yellowish. The leaves (phyllodes) are from 7-25 cm long by 1-3 cm wide and straight or slightly curved. They are light green and often hang down. They are limp, not stiff. The midrib and veins show up clearly. The flower heads are round and 1 cm across. They are pale yellow and are produced either in the angles of leaves or along a stalk at the end of the branches. The pods are long (7-10 cm) and thin (0.5 cm). They are hard and brittle. The pods are without hairs and are light brown. The pods are constricted between the seeds. The seeds are shiny and grey. The stalk of the seed is red.
Found in sand or clay soils along watercourses, or in swales between coastal sandhills. Found on plains, sand dunes, along drainage lines or on low-lying or hilly country, often in places where it recieves additional water.
