Species

Angiosperms > Fabales > Fabaceae > Acacia

Characteristics

Tree to 15 m high; trunk deeply fluted or not fluted, often with many short horizontal branches. Branchlets glabrous apart from scattered short hairs at extremities; new shoots resinous or not resinous, sericeous by silvery white or pale yellow hairs. Phyllodes narrowly elliptic or oblong-elliptic to linear-elliptic, occasionally narrowly lanceolate, shallowly to moderately recurved, sometimes straight or imperfectly sigmoid, not rigid, 3–11 cm long, 3–8 (–12) mm wide, minutely appressed-hairy, becoming glabrous, finely longitudinally striate with central vein sometimes slightly the most pronounced, not anastomosing; marginal nerve yellowish but not prominent. Inflorescences single or in pairs in axils, or rudimentary racemes to c. 1 mm long; peduncles 2–7 mm long, appressed white hairy except sometimes glabrous in pod; spikes 8–30 mm long. Flowers mostly 5-merous; sepals spathulate, 0.4–0.6 mm long, free, with a few hairs on tips; petals 1–1.2 mm long, occasionally sparsely hairy; ovary with dense long hairs. Pods not stipitate, deeply constricted and readily breaking into 1-seeded articles, flat, to 8 cm long, 4–6 (–8) mm wide, thinly coriaceous-crustaceous, longitudinally openly reticulate, glabrous or minutely appressed-hairy (especially at constrictions). Seeds longitudinal, oblong, 4–5 mm long, 2–2.5 mm wide; funicle filiform and not or scarcely expanded into an aril.
