Shrub or tree to 4 (–12) m high. Branchlets glabrous or (especially when young) sometimes hirsute or sparsely puberulous. Prickles absent. Stipules mostly caducous. Leaves bipinnate: petiole (2–) 3–5 (–6) cm long, glabrous or sparsely appressed-hairy, eglandular; rachis 6–14 (–20) cm long, glabrous or sparsely appressed-hairy, eglandular; pinnae 6–20 (–25) pairs, 2.5–9 cm long; pinnules mostly 30–60 pairs per pinna, narrowly oblong, 3–9 mm long, 0.5–1.5 mm wide, discolorous, glabrous or ciliate. Inflorescences racemose or irregular terminal panicles; peduncles 10–15 (–30) mm long; heads subglobose (obloid when in bud), pedicellate, whitish. Calyx much shorter than the corolla, scarcely lobed, glabrous or pubescent basally. Pods oblong to narrowly oblong, 4–9 cm long, 0.8–1.4 cm wide, straight, glabrous, chartaceous, stipitate. Seeds transverse, obovate to spherical, to 4 mm long, pale green and brown, sometimes mottled; areole distinct.
Hillsides, rock slopes, summits and in grassland with other shrubs, often in deciduous or semi-deciduous forest. Mostly on rather dry, often rocky, brushy slopes or in thin forest, frequent in pine-oak forest, sometimes in hedges, to 2,700 m.
Can be grown by seedlings. Seeds needs scarification and soaking.
