Perennial herb or shrub, up to 0.9 m high; sparsely setulose; dioecious. Stems erect, slender, firm, virgately branched, sparsely, patently setulose or glabrous. Leaves eglandular; subsessile; blade linear to narrowly ovate, 24-60 x 4-5 mm, apex acute, base cuneate, margins distantly serrate, lower surface with midrib and secondary nerves conspicuous, sparsely hairy. Flowers: male spikes erect, axillary, solitary, bracts narrowly linear-ovate; female spikes terminal, solitary, bracts subsessile, foliaceous, narrowly ovate, apex acuminate, base rounded, margins sharply serrate, glandular-hairy; styles united in lower fourth, laciniate, feathery forming a brush above bracts; Sep.-Dec.
Herb, up to 300 mm tall. Leaves linear-lanceolate, up to 10 mm wide, entire or only remotely toothed, glands sessile, midrib and secondary nerves, parallel, conspicuous. Styles free, red. Flowers red.
