Characteristics

Perennial shrub, 0.5-3.0 m high; stems slender, copiously branched, decumbent; branches faintly striate, glabrous. Leaves membranous, long-petioled, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, acute, base often truncate on smaller twigs and deeply cordate in main branches, margins coarsely crenately toothed; petioles sparingly puberulous, 12.7-19.1 mm long; stipules linear, spreading, glabrous. Inflorescences male and female distinct, both axillary; male spikes solitary to their axils, slender, with naked peduncle; bracts minute, puberulous; female spikes short; peduncles 25.4-50.8 mm long, bracts leafy, reniform-ovate, strongly and coarsely 5-9-toothed. Female flowers calyx deeply lobed; lobes ovate-lanceolate; ovary 3-lobed, densely papillose; styles 3, free, densely papillose. Flowering time Sept.-Jan. Seeds subglobose.
