Characteristics

Similar to A. indica but a small annual herb seldom exceeding 40 cm. in height.. The leaf-blade usually rounded at the base, crenate or crenate-serrate.. The stipules lanceolate, 1 mm. long.. The inflorescences 2–3 per axil, not exceeding 4 cm., mostly ♀ with a short upper ♂ portion terminated by a subsessile allomorphic ♀ flower, or else completely ♀, the ♀ bracts 2–6 mm. long, 4–12 mm. wide, dentate, not ribbed, eglandular or with 1–2 gland-tipped hairs, the terminal allomorphic ♀ flowers obovoid, muricate, each tubercle hair-tipped, but not fimbriate.. Very like A. indica, especially with regard to the number and shape of the female bracts, although similar to A. segetalis in habit, but the leaves are more rounded at the base, and the muricate allomorphic female flowers are usually subsessile and may be terminal or lateral on the inflorescence, and are glabrous except for a single white hair at the apex of each tubercle.
