Characteristics

Herb, wiry, up to 60 cm high. Leaves eglandular; lamina ovate, 5–60 mm long, 5–35 mm wide; base cuneate to truncate; margin crenate; tip acute to shortly acuminate; venation ± palminerved with 3 veins from base and 5 or 6 laterals per side of midrib further up lamina. Inflorescences axillary and usually paired, racemose-spicate, bisexual; axis with glandular trichomes. Male flowers: sepals lanceolate, 0.4–0.5 mm long; stamens 8. Female flowers ± sessile: sepals lanceolate, c. 0.5 mm long; styles 0.8–1.2 mm long, green to clear. Fruit depressed-globose, 1.5–2 mm long, 2–2.2 mm diam. Seeds globose to somewhat ovoid, 1.1–1.8 mm long, 0.8–1.1 mm wide.

Very similar to the preceding (A. crenata) in general habit, but with leaf-bases cuneate, the inflorescences tending to be crowded towards the shoot apices and sometimes also terminal, the ♀ bracts 1.5 mm. long, 4 mm. wide, closely enfolding the ovary and fruit, evenly beset with gland-tipped hairs, the allomorphic ♀ flowers terminal or lateral and scattered amongst the ♂ flowers, having 2 lateral fimbriate whorls, rugulose, puberulous, but not muricate.
An annual herb. It grows 50 cm tall. The young branches have yellow-brown hairs. The leaves are oval and 4-8 cm long by 2-4 cm wide. The base is wedge shaped and it tapers to the tip. The flowers are in groups of 1-3 in the axils of leaves. The fruit is a capsule with 3 sections. It is 2.5 mm across.

Environment

Locally common along roadsides or in abandoned fields, at elevations up to 400 metres. A weed of cultivation, roadsides and house-yards in New Guinea, often in partly-shaded places.
