Characteristics

Shrub, sprawling to erect, to 4 m high. Branchlets: lenticels absent; flaky bark absent. Leaves eglandular; lamina elliptic to ovate, 15–150 mm long, 4–60 mm wide; base cordate to obtuse; margin ± entire, crenate or rarely serrate; tip acute to acuminate; venation penninerved with 8–10 lateral veins per side of midrib. Inflorescences axillary and solitary, racemose or spicate, unisexual or occasionally bisexual. Male flowers: sepals ovate, 0.5–0.8 mm long; stamens 8. Female flowers ± sessile: sepals broadly ovate, c. 0.8 mm long; styles 5–7 mm long, red. Fruit depressed-globose, 2.5–2.8 mm long, c. 4 mm diam. Seeds ± globose, c. 2 mm long, 1.7–1.8 mm wide.
