Characteristics

Leaf blades 1–11 × 1–3.5 cm, very variable, ranging from suborbicular (at the base of the stem) to ovate, obovate, elliptic, oblong or narrowly oblanceolate or lanceolate, obtuse to subacute, acute or shortly caudate-acuminate at the apex, serrate or crenate-serrate on the margin, especially in the upper half, attenuate, cuneate to rounded or shallowly cordate at the base, chartaceous, sparingly pubescent above and beneath, later glabrescent, 3–5(7)-nerved from the base, tertiary nerves subparallel; lateral nerves in 3–6 pairs, ascending, fairly prominent beneath.

Female inflorescences 1–6 × 1.5–2.5 cm, spicate, usually solitary and terminal, occasionally axillary, capitate or cylindric, subsessile or shortly pedunculate, sometimes with a terminal male appendage; bracts accrescent to 1 × 1.5 cm, transversely ovate, regularly 8–11-fid almost to the base, the segments 3–5 mm long, triangular-lanceolate, pubescent, 1-flowered, greenish-brown.
Female flowers sessile; sepals 3, 1 mm long, linear-lanceolate, acute, ciliate; ovary c. 1 mm in diameter, subglobose, densely whitish-pubescent; styles up to 1.5 cm long, united at the base, pectinate, red or sometimes whitish.
Male racemes up to 12 cm long with a peduncle up to 5 cm long, solitary, axillary, erect, occasionally with 1–2 female flowers at the base or scattered along the axis; bracts resembling the stipules.
Male flowers shortly pedicellate; buds 4-lobed to subglobose, somewhat apiculate, sparingly to evenly pubescent; calyx lobes red, or white and edged with red; anthers white.
An erect densely caespitose perennial herb up to 45 cm high, from a woody rootstock; stems simple, numerous, crisped-puberulous, tomentose, villous or hirsute.
Seeds 2.5 × 2 mm, ovoid-subglobose, smooth, dark grey, with a small whitish elliptical caruncle.
Fruits 3–4 × 3.5–4.5 mm, 3-lobed, pubescent, greenish.
Stipules 1–3 mm long, linear-subulate.
