Inflorescences up to 9 cm long, spicate, axillary, solitary or paired, comprised mostly of male flowers, or at least half are male flowers, with 1–several female flowers at the base or in the lower half, rarely terminated by a solitary allomorphic female flower; male bracts minute; female bracts deeply digitately 5–7-partite, the lobes accrescent to up to 8 × 12 mm, linear-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, glabrous, pubescent or hirsute, sometimes glandular (var. glandulosa), 1-flowered.

Leaf blades 2–15 × 1–8 cm, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acuminate or often caudate at the apex, crenate or serrate, rounded or cordate at the base, membranous to thinly chartaceous, sparingly to evenly pubescent or hirsute, especially on the midrib and main nerves on both surfaces, or else subglabrous, 5–9-nerved from the base; lateral nerves in 4–6 pairs.
Female flowers sessile; sepals 3, 0.5 mm long, ovate, ciliate; ovary 0.3 mm in diameter, somewhat 3-lobed, pubescent and tomentose; styles 2–3 mm long, free, laciniate, white. Allomorphic female flowers (when present) obovoid, with an apical fimbriate whorl, sparingly puberulous.
Stems tomentose, puberulous, hirsute or glandular (var. glandulosa), greenish at first, often becoming reddish-brown.
Fruits 1.5 × 2.5 mm, 3-lobed, ± smooth or slightly tubercled, pubescent above, tomentose below.
Male flowers subsessile; buds rounded to 4-angled, pubescent, reddish; anthers yellowish.
Seeds 1 × 1 mm, ovoid-subglobose, smooth, brown, with a small velar caruncle.
An erect or scandent woody perennial herb or subshrub up to 3 m tall.
Stipules 2–4 mm long, linear-lanceolate or setaceous.
