Perennial herb, up to 1 m high; shrubby, dioecious. Stems woody, sparsely branched; bark striate; pubescent. Leaves shortly petioled; blade ovate or narrowly ovate, 35-90 x 13-45 mm, apex obtuse or acute, base rounded or shallowly cordate, margins toothed, veins conspicuous, glandular-punctate between reticulations, many, stipitate glands on both surfaces also present; petiole 2 mm long, setulose. Flowers: male spikes axillary, solitary, cylindric, densely flowered; female spikes terminal, solitary, sessile, bracts 1-flowered, subsessile, leafy, margins toothed, puberulous or setulose, outer surface with long, stipitate glandular hairs; styles united at base, laciniate upwards, red; Aug.-Jan.
