Characteristics

Annual, occasionally perennial herb. Stems procumbent, branches spreading widely and often rooting along their whole length, leafy. Leaves opposite; blade elliptic, broadly ovate to almost round, up to 30 x 25 mm, base cuneate, margins subentire to coarsely toothed, apex acute or obtuse, glabrous or glabrescent above and gland-dotted below; petiole up to 10 mm long. Heads shortly radiate, solitary, pedunculate, axillary, 5-7 mm in diameter in flower, up to 20 mm in fruit. Involucral bracts biseriate, outer row herbaceous, inner row enveloping cypselae of ray florets. Receptacle paleate. Flowers: ray florets female, fertile, yellowish; disc florets functionally male, yellowish; Jan., Feb. Fruit with cypsela, 4 or 5, radiating from disc, each enveloped in an enlarged involucral bract, fusiform-oblong, 8-10 mm long, covered in short hooked spines. Pappus absent.
