Characteristics

Suberect herb, 10-60 cm. Stem and branches. pubescent. Leaves thin, narrowly elliptic or ovate, 6-8 by 2.5-4 cm, acute or broadly acute, base cuneate or attenuate, hirsute or pilose on both surfaces, margin serrate or crenate-dentate; petiole 0.5-6 cm, hirsute. Verticillasters always in a ter-minal, spike-like inflorescence 4-6 (or more) cm long. Bracts pale greenish yellow to pink, broadly ovate or spathulate, 6-8 mm, pilose and ciliate. Calyx campanulate, 6-8 mm long, in fruit 8-10 mm, more or less 2-lipped, the upper lip 2-toothed, slightly longer than the lower lip, the teeth straight (in fruit often slightly recurved), obtuse or rounded at apex. Corolla white to light violet or pink, 3-4 mm exceeding the calyx, upper lip erect, emarginate, lower lip much longer than the upper one, straight or decurved. Stamens in 2 pairs, the lower pair longer, exserted. Nutlets obtusely trigonous, 1.2-2 by 0.5 mm, scaly and chaffy on the ventral surfaces and on the top, rough and pubescent on the dorsal surface.

Stems prostrate, rooting adventitiously, ascending portion unbranched, ca. 16 cm, densely pubescent. Petiole 0.5-3(-6) cm; leaf blade ovate, 6.5-9.5 × 3-4 cm, papery, purplish, adaxially sparsely strigose, abaxially densely pubescent on veins, base broadly cuneate, margin crenulate or serrate-crenate, apex acute. Spikes terminal, cylindric, 3.8-5 cm; verticillasters 6-flowered; bracts ovate to spathulate, 6-8 mm, yellowish to pink. Pedicel ca. 1 mm. Calyx 6-7 mm, 15-veined, 2-lipped, becoming enlarged to 8-10 mm, conspicuously netted, pubescent or subglabrescent with yellowish glands; teeth subequal or middle tooth larger. Corolla ca. 7.5 mm, slightly exserted, puberulent; tube slender, ± cylindric except slightly dilated at throat; upper lip 2-lobed, lobes semicircular; lobes of lower lip subcircular, middle lobe entire, lateral lobes ciliate. Anther cells 2. Style apex subequally 2-cleft. Nutlets oblong-obovoid, apex and adaxially densely linear-scaly, abaxially smooth. Fl. Nov, fr. Dec.
