Characteristics

Shrub, or tree to 15 m high. Internodes of young branchlets terete. Leaves trifoliolate (occasional or rather frequent leaves simple), glabrous; petiole 1.5–6 cm long; laminae elliptic to obovate, or narrowly so, 4–7.5 (–12) cm long, 1.6–3.5 (–4) cm wide, rounded to obtusely acuminate, with acumen to 0.4 cm long. Inflorescences few-flowered, axillary,  2.5–6 cm long; pedicels 1.5–3 mm long (1.5–4 mm long in fruit), glabrous. Flower buds obtuse. Sepals 1.3–2 mm wide, glabrous adaxially. Petals 6–9 mm long, like staminal filaments deciduous in fruit. Gynoecium syncarpous, like fruit 4-loculed; ovary with a few apical trichomes or glabrous, like fruit with septicidal fissures in c. distal half. Fruit syncarpous, ovate or elliptic in outline, 10–15 mm long, without stylar beak, with a few apical trichomes or glabrous; occasional fruiting carpels with ruptured wall opening into locule; dried fruit as seen in medial T.S. with outer part of pericarp less than 0.5 mm thick, with fleshy exocarp but apparently lacking mesocarp; endocarp thinly cartilaginous. Seeds c. 4 mm long.

A small tree. It grows 8-12 m tall and 2-5 m across. It has a dense dark green crown. The branches do not have hairs. The leaves can have one or three leaflets. The leaflets are 4-12 cm long by 2-6 cm wide. They are thick, leathery and dark green. The leaf stalk is 2-6 cm long. The flowers are few in clusters in the angles where leaves join. The flower clusters are 3-6 cm long and the flowers are 1 cm long. The flowers are cream and have a sweet smell. The fruit is four angled and 1.5-2 cm across. They are greenish yellow. The fruit is fleshy with seeds inside Normally there are four seeds inside. The seeds are 0.4 cm long.

Environment

It is a tropical plant. It occurs in the rainforests in Northeast Queensland, Australia. It occurs in the higher altitudes. It will grow in cooler places but needs some protection from frosts. It needs well drained soil. It will grow in shade or sun.
