Genus

Pteridophytes > Schizaeales > Schizaeaceae

Characteristics

Rhizome subterranean, short-creeping, horizontal or ascending, branched, clothed with simple brown hairs, bearing numerous wiry roots. Stipes clustered along rhizome, rarely scattered, barely distinguishable from lamina. Fronds dimorphic, simple, flattened or terete, unicostate, usually glabrous. Sporogenous fronds constricted just below apex, with a terminal tuft of digitate, sporogenous lobes. Sporangia arranged in 2 rows on either side of the costa, but often in 4 or more rows; margins of segments protecting sori when immature. Spores smooth or with ridges or tubercles. Gametophyte subterranean, cylindrical, lacking chlorophyll.
More
Plants terrestrial. Roots dark, fibrous, covered with dark, stiff hairs, 2--3 mm. Stems upright; hairs uniseriate. Leaves all fertile (even youngest), unbranched, long-petioled. Blades falsely digitate, reduced to 2--many erect to spreading terminal rays; rays appearing to be whorled but actually borne on very short rachis. Sporangia in 2--4 rows. Gametophytes subterranean, not green, tuberlike, brown-hairy. x = 134, 140.
