Adenandra fragrans (Sims) Schult.

Species

Angiosperms > Sapindales > Rutaceae > Adenandra

Characteristics

An erect, vigorous, moderately branched shrublet, 40-100 cm high (old specimens in unburnt vegetation sometimes much branched, up to c. 120 cm high and 100 cm in diameter). Young branches glabrous, pale brown; later defoliated and marked with more or less conspicuous leaf-scars in a regular pattern; finally dark ash-grey. Leaves rather sparsely set, erecto-patent, not imbricated, glabrous; petiole 1-3 mm long, appressed, yellowish; blade oblong to narrowly oblong, 7-20(-301 x 2.5-4.3 mm, with slightly revolute margins, entire or somewhat glandular-crenulate, acute to obtuse, often mucronulate, above dull green and smooth, below pale green, with a prominent mid-vein, and spotted with 20-100 often rather inconspicuous glandular dots. Uppermost leaves hardly changed in shape, not forming an involucre. Flowers on pedicels 8-18(-30) mm long in 4-18-flowered, slightly resiniferous umbels, the pedicels sometimes being mixed with sterile, leafy twigs. Bracts distinctly different from the uppermost cauline leaves, lanceolate, 6-12 x 1.8-2.8 mm, subcarinate, usually acute, glabrous, pale green. Bracteoles attached at or below the middle of the pedicel, linear to spathulate, more or less appressed, 2.0-3.5 x c. 0.7 mm, usually acute, glabrous, pale. Calyx 4.0-7.0 mm, divided to 55-70%, brownish-green, glabrous, appearing pitted from immersed glands; segments ovate to elliptic, 2.5-4.2 x 1.0-3.0 mm, obtuse, with slightly membranous, often irregularly crenulate margins, sometimes puberulent inside. Petals white inside, more or less pink outside, with rather conspicuous veins, often glandular-punctate in the central part, glabrous; claw 2-3 mm long, limb obovate, 5.5-8.0 x 4.0-5.0 nun, often with irregular margins, emarginate. Staminodes erect, rather uniformly broad, 3.0-4.2 mm long, patently pilose, only slightly widening apically, tipped by an inconspicuous, sessile gland. Stamens: filaments subulate, c. 1.5 mm long, patently pilose, reddish; anthers broadly ovoid, dorsifixed, versatile, 1.1-1.6 x 0.8-1.2 mm, brown, more or less pilose, tipped by a stipitate, capitate, finally cupular gland 0.3-0.4 mm across. Ovary globose, c. 1 mm across, upper part papillate (from small, pale, stipitate glands); style c. 1 mm at anthesis, stout, recurved, minutely pilose; stigma capitate to discoid, brownish. Mature capsule about as long as the calyx, slightly transversely rugose and somewhat papillate in the upper part, greenish-brown. Seeds narrowly ovoid, 3.2-4.4 x 1.6-2.0 mm.
