Species

Angiosperms > Sapindales > Rutaceae > Adenandra

Characteristics

An ascending to erect, sparsely branched shrublet, 20-45 cm high. Young branches puberulent, reddish-brown; later glabrescent, defoliated, dark ash-grey with rough cortex but comparatively inconspicuous leaf-scars. Leaves rather densely set, erecto-patent, loosely imbricated, glabrous; petiole c. 1 mm, erect, pale reddish; blade elliptic to narrowly elliptic or narrowly obovate, 5-9.5 x 2.4-3.5 mm, usually acute, with slightly revolute margins, often crenulate in the upper half, above dull green and smooth, below whitish-green and sparsely glandular-punctate. Uppermost leaves hardly changed in shape, not forming an involucre. Flowers on villous pedicels (4-)7-18 mm long and c. 1 mm thick, in 2-12-flowered, very condensed, sub-umbellate corymbs (pedicels elongating considerably from bud to flowering stage). Bracts distinctly different from the uppermost, cauline leaves, lanceolate, 2.4-3.5 x 0.8-1.1 mm, sub-carinate, acute, villous along the margins, sub-membranous or green towards the apex. Bracteoles attached near the base of the pedicel, similar to the bracts but slightly smaller and entirely membranous. Calyx 6.0-8.0 mm, divided to 75-80%, villous, greenish at the base, with large dull rather inconspicuous glandular dots; segments elliptic, 4.6-6.3 x 2.8-3.6 mm, obtuse, becoming dark purple towards the apex. Petals with rather conspicuous veins, white inside, reddish outside, especially in the central apical part and there often with 10-15 glandular dots; claw 3.5-5.4 mm long, more or less villous along the margins; limb cordate to orbicular, 6.5-8.5 x 6.7-8.5 mm, obtuse to moderately acute, puberulent on both sides. Staminodes erect, rather stout, 3.8-4.5 mm long, uniformly broad to subclavate, pale reddish, upper part somewhat incurved, puberulent for most of their length but with a conspicuous tuft of long, straight hairs at the apex, tipped by a capitate, yellowish gland c. 6.7 mm across. Stamens: filaments subulate, somewhat incurved. 1-2 mm long, nearly glabrous to sparsely villous, yellowish: anthers narrowly ovoid, dorsifixed, versatile, 2.4-3.2 x 1.2-1.6 mm, puberulent to villous, light brown, tipped by a relatively long-stipitate, discoid, orbicular, more or less concave gland c. 0.7 mm across. Ovary globose, c. 1.5 mm across, villous, light brown, upper part sparsely papillate (from pale, stipitate glands); style 1-1.5 mm long, stout, recurved; stigma discoid, light brown. Mature capsule somewhat shorter than the calyx, transversely rugose, sparsely villous, greenish-brown. Seeds ovoid, 3.2-3.9 x 2.0-2.5 mm.
