An erect, moderately branched shrublet up to c. 100 cm high and 50 cm in diameter (usually 40-60 cm high). Branches ascending, terete, with thin ridges formed by decurrent leaf-bases, puberulent when young; later glabrescent, defoliated, marked with conspicuous regular leaf-scars, and dark brown to blackish. Leaves rather densely set, patent to erecto-patent, sometimes imbricated; petiole 0.5-1 mm long, appressed; pale reddish, often ciliate; blade broadly elliptic, 3.5-4.6 x 2.4-3.2 mm, acute to apiculate, coriaceous, with thickened revolute margins, somewhat ciliate when young, smooth above, pale green with few and rather inconspicuous glandular dots below. Uppermost leaves densely imbricated, spathulate, ciliate, forming an involucre. Flowers subsessile in dense, 4-12-flowered terminal heads; remnants of previous season's heads often persistent in branch axils. Bracts similar to the uppermost leaves. Bracteoles linear-oblanceolate, 5.7-7.3 x 0.9-1.6 mm, carinate, ciliate, equalling the calyx, lower part colourless, upper half or third gradually becoming dark purple. Calyx 5.0-7.2 mm, divided to c. 2/3, glabrous; segments broadly oblong to obovate, 3.3-4.8 x 2.0-3.2 mm. obtusely apiculate, when dry silvery grey with dark purple spots and stripes (sometimes entirely dark purple, rarely green). Petals white on both sides, glabrous, with indistinct veins; claw 2.3-3.1 mm long, gradually widening as it merges into the limb; the latter broadly elliptic to obovate, 3.7-5.0 x 2.9-3.9 mm, obtusely apiculate. Staminodes clavate, 2.9-3.8 mm long, patently pilose, tipped by a sessile gland. Stamens: filaments tapering, 0.6-1.2 mm long at anthesis, later elongating, patently pilose; anthers ovoid to cordate, dorsifixed, versatile, 0.9-1.4 x 0.7-1.1 mm, tipped by a shortly stipitate, discoid to capitate, olive-green gland 0.3-0.4 mm across. Ovary globose, 1-1.5 mm across, glabrous, upper part papillate (from pale stipitate glands); style 0.7-1.0 mm long, recurved at anthesis; stigma capitate. Mature capsule somewhat shorter than the calyx, transversely rugose. Seeds ovoid, 2.6-2.9 x 1.7-1.9 mm.
