Adenandra schlechteri Dümmer

Species

Angiosperms > Sapindales > Rutaceae > Adenandra

Characteristics

An erect, slender, sparsely branched shrublet, 20-40 cm high. Young branches puberulent, yellowish; later glabrescent, defoliated, rather smooth, terete, greyish-brown. Leaves rather densely set, erecto-patent, loosely imbricated, glabrous; petiole c. 1 mm, oppressed, yellowish; blade obovate to narrowly obovate,5.4-8.8 x 2.4-5.0 mm, obtuse to moderately acute, with thickened, entire, somewhat revolute margins, dull green above, whitish-green below, completely eglandular or with rather inconspicuous glandular dots on the margins. Uppermost leaves hardly changed in shape, not forming an involucre. Flowers on villous pedicels 6-12 mm long and c. 0.6 mm thick, in 6-20-flowered, very condensed, subumbellate corymbs (pedicels elongating considerably from bud to flowering stage). Bracts distinctly different from the uppermost cauline leaves, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 1.8-2.6 x 0.4-0.7 mm, sub-carinate, acute, villous along the margins, more or less membranous, yellowish. Bracteoles attached at or very near the base of the pedicel, similar to the bracts but slightly smaller. Calyx 4.5-6.0 mm, divided to 75-80%, villous, rather uniformly violet-brown (probably more violet or purple in fresh material), inconspicuously glandular-punctate; segments ovate, 3.2-4.5 x 2.2-2.7 mm, ciliate, with thin margins, obtusely carinate towards the apex, moderately acute. Petals with inconspicuous veins, glabrous, white inside, pinkish outside; claw 1.5-3.4 mm long, very gradually widening into the elliptic to obovate, 4.5-6.5 mm long and 3.5-4.8 mm broad limb; the latter apiculate, usually with 5-15 glandular dots in the central apical part. Staminodes erect, rather stout. 2.5-3.0 mm long, reddish, tapering from a glabrous, c. 0.7 mm broad base, patently pilose for most of their length, apically slightly incurved and expanding into a conspicuous, capitate gland c. 0.7 mm across. Stamens: filaments subulate, somewhat incurved, 0.8-1.3 mm long, c. 0.5 mm broad and glabrous at the base, patently pilose in the upper part; anthers broadly ovoid, dorsifixed, versatile, 1.0-1.4 x 0.8-1.1 mm, sparsely pilose, brown, tipped by a shortly stipitate, discoid, orbicular gland 0.3-0.5 mm across. Ovary globose, c. 1 mm across, sparsely pilose, upper part papillate (from pale, stipitate glands); style 0.5-1 mm long, stout, recurved; stigma discoid, brownish. Mature capsule (only a few seen) somewhat longer than the calyx, broad, transversely rugose, sparsely pubescent, brown. Seeds broadly ovoid, c. 3.0 x 2.3. mm.
