Characteristics

An ascending to erect, 20-100 cm high shrublet. Leaves erecto-patent, sometimes loosely imbricated, 4-13 x 2-5 mm, very variable in shape, but usually glabrescent, more or less glandular-punctate beneath. Flowers subsessile or on up to 7 mm (rarely, in one subspecies, up to 12 mm) long pedicels, solitary or in 26-flowered inflorescences. Calyx segments 4.0-9.5 mm long, very variable in shape, upper part usually purplish. Petals suffused with red outside, porcelain-white inside; limb 7-14 x 5.5-10 mm. Staminodes patently pilose, tipped by an oval gland which is usually concave to cupular on the adaxial side. Anthers usually glabrous, tipped by a stipitate, spoon-shaped gland. Ovary glabrous, upper part papillate, style recurved. Capsule somewhat shorter than the calyx.
