Species

Angiosperms > Sapindales > Rutaceae > Adenandra

Characteristics

A sparsely to moderately branched shrublet, usually 30-50 cm high with ascending to suberect branches, often sprouting after fire. Branches terete or somewhat angular, puberulent when young, with thin ridges formed by decurrent leaf-bases; later glabrescent, defoliated,.and marked with leaf-scars; cortex ash-grey to brownish. Leaves rather sparsely to rather densely set, patent to erecto-patent, loosely imbricated or not, glabrous or ciliate; petiole appressed, 0.5-1 mm long, pale reddish; blade lanceolate to elliptic, 6-12 x 1.4-3.6 mm, moderately acute, more or less coriaceous, with thickened, revolute margins, dull green and smooth above, whitish-green with a prominent green mid-vein and a few inconspicuous glandular dots below. Lower leaves often long-ciliate; upper leaves successively shorter, broader, more coriaceous, with less revolute margins, and usually glabrous. Uppermost leaves hardly changed in shape, not forming an involucre. Flowers subsessile in 2-10-flowered, slightly glutinous, terminal heads. Bracts broadly cuneate to obreniform, 3.5-4.7 x 4.8-6.2 mm, obtusely carinate, glabrous, upper half usually reddish-purple, produced into a broadly triangular, thickened, reflexed, reddish to dark purple apex. Bracteoles cuneate, 3.0-4.1 x 2.3-2.0 mm, obtusely carinate, glabrous, upper half more or less reddish-purple; keel produced into a thickened, obtuse, dark apex. Calyx 5.0-6.8 mm, divided to about 2/3, lower half sparsely pubescent, usually glabrous above; segments ovate to elliptic, 3.6-4.5 x 2.8-3.8 mm, slightly overlapping, obtusely carinate, glandular-punctate alongside the mid-vein, reddish-purple with more or less recurved, thickened, dark purple apex.-Petals pinkish outside, white inside; claw 2-3 mm long, somewhat ciliate or puberulent, abruptly widening into the broadly elliptic, 6.5-8.5 mm long and 5.3-6.5 mm broad, obtuse to truncate limb. Staminodes clavate, erect, 3.5-4.5 mm long, patently pilose (long-pilose in the upper third), tipped by a glossy, brownish-red gland c. 0.5 mm across. Stamens: filaments tapering, pilose, 1.0-1.8 mm long at anthesis, later elongating; anthers ovoid to broadly oblong, dorsifixed, versatile, 0.9-1.3 x 0.6-0.9 nun, glabrous or sparsely pilose, brown, tipped by a stipitate, capitate, brownish gland 0.3-0.4 mm across. Ovary globose, 0.8-1.2 mm across, upper part papillate (from pale, stipitate glands); style 0.5-1 mm, recurved at anthesis; stigma capitate to discoid. Mature capsule about as long as the calyx, transversely rugose, somewhat glandular-pubescent. Seeds narrowly ovoid, 3.1-3.6 x 1.5-1.9 mm.
