Characteristics

Somewhat woody climber to 20 m., up to 10 cm. thick at base; twigs grey-green or pruinose, not spotted.. Leaf-blades ± grey-glaucous beneath, not punctate, entire or rarely ± 3-lobed in the upper half, ovate, base rounded to cordate, top acute, up to 1.5 cm. acuminate, 2.5–12 by 1.5–9 cm., 3(–5)-nerved from base with in addition 1(–2) pairs of nerves from the midrib not ending in the leaf-margin, reticulation distinct; margin entire or faintly toothed; petiole 2–10 cm.. Gland at blade-base single on a ± convex subspathulate median appendage 1–3 mm.; blade-glands 2–5, distinct, 1(–2) in or close to the axils of the nerves; marginal glands minute, up to 12 on either side of the blade.. Stipules broadly reniform, margin ± lacerate, 0.5–1(–1.5) mm.. Inflorescences peduncled for (0.5–)2–16 cm., up to 40-flowered in ♂, 2–4-flowered in ♀, tendrils 1 or 3, 1–3 cm., or absent; sterile tendrils simple or 3-fid, 10–25 cm.. Male flowers ± campanulate, including the 3–4 mm. long stipe 10–17 mm.; hypanthium shallowly cup-shaped, 1–1.5 by 2.5–4.5 mm., calyx-tube 0; sepals ± oblong-lanceolate, obtuse, subentire, (6–)8–11 by 2–3 mm., sparingly punctate or not; petals oblanceolate, obtuse to acute, finely serrulate-laciniate, (6–)8–10(–11) mm., 3–5-nerved, ± punctate; filaments 2–3 mm., connate for 0.5–1.5 mm., inserted at the base of the hypanthium; anthers 4–5 mm., obtuse to subacute; septa ± 0; corona consisting of 5 cap-shaped parts alternating with the petals, 0.2–0.5 mm. high, sometimes superposed by a row of wart-like appendages or a knobbly rim; disk glands 0.. Female flowers ± campanulate, including the 0.5–4 mm. long stipe 7.5–12 mm.; hypanthium flatfish, 0.5–0.8 by 2.5–3.5 mm.; calyx-tube 0; sepals oblong-lanceolate, obtuse to acute, serrulate towards apex, 5–7 mm., (1–)3-nerved; staminodes ± 1 mm.; septa 0; corona an inconspicuous rim ± interrupted by the petals; disk glands 0; gynophore ± 0–5 mm., ovary ovoid, 3–4 mm., finely punctate; style 1–1.5 mm.; stigmas subsessile, reniform to subglobose, papillate-laciniate, each ± 2 mm. in diameter.. Fruits 1–3 per inflorescence, ovoid, top acutish, excluding the 1–2(–3) mm. long gynophore 3–5 by 1.7–2.5(–3) cm.; pericarp woody-coriaceous, ± 0.5 mm. thick, ± smooth to granulate..
