Characteristics

Herbaceous climber to 5 m., glabrous, growing from a tuber.. Leaf-blades pale greenish, not punctate beneath, entire, broadly ovate to triangular, rarely lanceolate, base cordate to truncate or hastate, top obtuse to acute, 2–10 by 3–8 cm., with 3–5(–7) main nerves from near base or ± pinninerved, margin entire; petiole 0.5–5.5 cm.. Glands at blade-base 2, contiguous, situated on the subspathulate or ± 2-lobed short-peltate blade-base; no other glands.. Stipules narrowly triangular, 1–2 mm.. Inflorescences sessile or peduncled up to 5 cm., 1–15-flowered in ♂, 1–3-flowered in ♀; tendril 1, simple, 3–12 cm.; sterile tendrils up to 15 cm.. Male flowers tubiform, including the 4–9 mm. long stipe 40–75 mm.; hypanthium ± cup-shaped, tapering, 1.5–3 mm.; calyx-tube 30–55 by 5–9 mm.; calyx-lobes ovate-oblong, subobtuse, 5–7.5 mm., crenulate or fimbriate; petals linear, acute, 30–45 mm., 1–3-nerved, densely ± 2 mm. fimbriate, inserted at the same level as or up to 2 mm. above the corona; filaments 7–10 mm., connate for 0.5–1 mm., inserted at the base of the hypanthium or on a short androgynophore; anthers 7–8.5 mm., obtuse; septa ± 2 mm. high; corona threads fine, 1–1.5 mm.; disk glands ± 2 mm.. Female flowers not known.. Fruits 1–2 per inflorescence, subglobose, excluding the 1–2 mm. long gynophore 4–5 by 4 cm.; pericarp thickly coriaceous.. Seeds 15–20 per capsule, ovate, ± 7 mm.

Leaf-lamina 2–10 × 3–8·5 cm., simple, unlobed, ovate to triangular or lanceolate, apex obtuse to acute with mucro 0·5–1 mm. long, margin entire, cordate to truncate or hastate at the base, membranous, greenish above, paler below, not punctate, with 3–5(7) main nerves from the base, 1–2(4) pairs of nerves from the midrib and rather indistinct reticulation; petiole 0·5–5·5 cm. long.
Cymes sessile or with peduncle up to 5 cm. long, 1–15-flowered in male, 1–3-flowered in female; bracts and bracteoles 1–2·5 mm. long, narrowly triangular to oblong, acute; pedicels 10–30 mm. long in male flower.
Glands of the lamina-base 2, 1·5–3 mm. in diameter, contiguous, yellowish, borne on the subspathulate or ± 2-lobed 2–5 mm. wide peltate lamina-base; glands of the lamina 0.
Capsule 4–5 × 4 cm., subglobose, with thick coriaceous pericarp, 15–20-seeded.
