(incl. the 2·5–6 mm. long stipe); hypanthium 1·5–2 × 3–5 mm., broadly cup-shaped; calyx-tube 0; sepals 8–10 mm. long, lanceolate, obtuse, subentire; petals 6–7 ×1·5–2 mm., lanceolate, acute, 3–5-nerved, serrulate; corona comprising a set of fine woolly hairs 0·5–1 mm. long; stamen-filaments 2–3 mm. long, connate at the base for 1–1·5 mm., inserted at the base of the hypanthium; anthers 4·5–5 × 1 mm., obtuse, with apiculum up to 0·1 mm. long; disk-glands 0·5–1 mm. long; vestigial ovary c. 1 mm. long on a gynophore 0·5–1 mm. long.

Leaf-lamina 3–16 × 3–15 cm., 5-partite almost to the base, suborbicular in outline, cordate at the base, ± coriaceous, greyish-or purplish-green; leaf-segments 2–11 × 0·8–6 cm., ovate or elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, obtuse at the apex, margin entire, acute to rounded at the base, with distinct reticulation; petiole 1–8(9) cm. long.
Cymes in the axils of normal or ± reduced leaves, the latter crowded on short shoots up to 3 cm. long, up to 20-flowered in male, 1–3-flowered in female; peduncle up to 2·-5 cm. long; tendrils 0–1, 1–6 cm. long; pedicels 2–8 mm. long.
Trunk up to 2·5 × 0·5 m., erect, sometimes forked, soft-wooded, with smooth grey lenticellate bark, towards the apex producing half-climbing or drooping branches up to 3 m. long.
Glands at the lamina-base 2(4), 1–3 mm. in diameter, separate or contiguous, on 2 ± connate auricles.
Capsule 1·5–2 × 1·2–1·5 cm., ellipsoid, with coriaceous pericarp, 4–10-seeded.
Stipules 1·5–2 mm. long, narrowly triangular to linear.
Seeds 7 × 7 × 2·5 mm., suborbicular, pitted.
Sterile tendrils up to 12 cm. long.
