Characteristics

Climber to 6 m., glabrous, growing from a tuberous rootstock.. Leaf-blades grey-green, often reddish nerved, not punctate beneath, entire, ovate to suborbicular, base cordate to subtruncate, top obtuse to subacute, 2–9(–17) by 1.5–6(–11) cm., 5(–7)-nerved from base to ± pinninerved; margin entire; petiole 1–6(–9) cm.. Glands at blade-base 2, separate or ± contiguous, on 2 small auricles which are ± connate over the top of the petiole; no other glands present.. Stipules triangular to lanceolate, acute, 0.5–2.5 mm.. Inflorescences sessile or peduncled for up to 5 cm., up to 5-flowered in male, 1–2-flowered in female; tendril 0 or 1, (0.5–)3–8 cm.; sterile tendrils up to 15 cm.. Male flowers tubiform-urceolate, including the 4–4.5 mm. long stipe 20–35(–38) mm.; hypanthium cup-shaped, tapering, 0.5–1 by 3 mm.; calyx-tube 10–25 by 5–11 mm., lobes ovate to triangular, subacute, 4–8 mm., crenulate-laciniate; petals linear, subacute, 10–18 mm., 3-nerved, densely feather-like, 1–2 mm. fimbriate, inserted 1–5 mm. above the corona; filaments 2.5–3 mm., free, on a short androgynophore; anthers 5.5–7 mm., obtuse; septa 0; corona threads 0.5–1 mm.; disk glands 1–1.5 mm.. Female flowers shortly tubiform, including the 0.5–1.5 mm. long stipe 15–20 mm.; hypanthium 1–1.5 by 4 mm.; calyx-tube 10–14 by 8–10 mm., lobes triangular, subacute, 3–4 mm., crenulate-fimbriate; petals linear, acute, (7–)8–10 mm., 1-nerved, fimbriate or not, inserted ± 2 mm. above the corona; staminodes ± 2 mm.; septa 0; corona threads 0.5–1 mm.; disk glands 0.5–1 mm.; gynophore 1–1.5 mm.; ovary subglobose, 4–5.5 mm.; styles connate for 1 mm., style-arms 1–1.5 mm.; stigmas much branched, ± woolly-papillate, each 2.5–3.5 mm. in diameter.. Fruits 1 per inflorescence, subglobose, excluding the 2–5 mm. long gynophore 4–5 by 3.5–4.5 cm.; pericarp thick, coriaceous outside, spongy inside.. Seeds ± 40 per capsule, ovoid-ellipsoid, ± 6–9 mm.
