Characteristics

Climber up to 5 m., growing from a tuberous rootstock, glabrescent.. Leaf-blades pale green, densely reddish punctate, finely pubescent especially on the nerves beneath, entire to deeply 3–5-lobed, suborbicular in outline, base cordate to subtruncate, top acute, up to 1 cm. acuminate, 5–12 by 4–13 cm., ± 5-nerved from base; lobes elliptic to oblong, ± constricted at base, 1–8 cm.; margin remotely up to 3 mm. dentate; petiole 2–6.5 cm.. Glands at blade-base 2, on 2 small auricles lateral at the top of the petiole; no other glands present.. Stipules triangular, acute-acuminate, ± 1 mm.. Inflorescences peduncled for 0.5–6 cm., 3–15-flowered in ♂; tendril 1.5–5 cm.; sterile tendrils up to 15 cm.. Male flowers tubular-infundibuliform, including the 3–6 mm. long stipe 25–35 mm.; hypanthium, including calyx-tube, (15–)18–24 by (6–)8–10 mm., lobes ovate-triangular, subacute, 4–5.5 mm., serrulate; petals lanceolate, 3–5 mm., 3-nerved, densely fimbriate, inserted 11–15 mm. above the base of the hypanthium; filaments 10–21 mm., connate for 1–2 mm., inserted at the base of the hypanthium; anthers (3–)4–7 mm., obtuse; septa 0; corona 0; disk glands ± 1.5 mm.. Female flowers and fruit not known.

Leaf-lamina 5–12 × 4–13 cm., entire to deeply 3–5-lobed, suborbicular, acute-acuminate and mucronate at the apex, cordate to subtruncate at the base, membranous, brownish-green on the upper surface, paler beneath, usually densely reddish-punctate, pubescent especially on the nerves, with 5 main basal nerves, up to 4 pairs of nerves from the midrib and indistinct reticulation; lobes 1–8 cm. long, elliptic to oblong, usually constricted at the base, remotely denticulate; petiole 2–6·5 cm. long.
Cymes 3–15-flowered in male; peduncle 0·5–6 cm. long; bracts and bracteoles 3–6 mm. long, lanceolate, dentate-laciniate; pedicels 4–10 mm. long, glabrous.
Glands of the lamina-base 2, on 2 auricles 1–1·5 mm. in diameter, lateral to the apex of the petiole.
Fertile branches 2–5 mm. in diameter, greenish, glabrous, with internodes 5–15 cm. long.
