Characteristics

Subherbaceous climber to ± 3 m., glabrous, growing from a tuberous rootstock.. Leaves pale green, finely red-brown punctate beneath, 3(–5)-foliolate, ± suborbicular in outline, base subcordate, 4–8 by 5–10 cm., 3–5-nerved from base; leaflets entire, ovate to oblong, base attenuate, top acute to subobtuse, 2–6 cm.; margin entire; petiolule 0–1 cm.; petiole 1–4 cm.. Glands at blade base 2, on 2 small auricles at the transition to the petiole; blade-glands 2(–4), situated in between the insertions of the leaflets.. Stipules narrowly triangular, acute, 1–1.5 mm., withering.. Inflorescences peduncled for 2–7.5 cm., up to 12-flowered in ♂, 1–3-flowered in ♀, tendril (0 or) 1, 3–6 cm.; sterile tendrils ± 8 cm.. Male flowers ± tubiform-campanulate, including the 2-7 mm. long stipe 18–26 mm.; hypanthium cup-shaped, 2.5–4 mm.; calyx-tube 5–8 by 3–7 mm., lobes ovate-oblong, subacute, 5–9 mm., denticulate; petals lanceolate-linear, subacute, 5– 6.5 mm., 3-nerved, denticulate-sinuate, inserted at the same level as or up to 2 mm. above the corona; filaments 2–2.5 mm., connate for ± 1 mm., inserted on a short androgyophore; anthers 5–5.5 mm., obtuse; septa 1.5–3 mm.; corona hairs sparse, 0.5–1 mm.; disk glands ± 1 mm.. Female flowers campanulate, including the 1.5–2.5 mm. long stipe 10–15 mm.; hypanthium 1.5–2 mm.; calyx-tube 3.5–5.5 by 6–8 mm., lobes oblong, acute, 4–6 mm., entire; petals lanceolate-linear, subacute, 2–2.5 mm., 1-nerved, entire, inserted at the same level as or up to 0.5 mm. above the corona; staminodes 3 mm.; septa ± 1 mm. high; corona hairs sparse, ± 0.5 mm.; disk glands ± 0.5 mm.; gynophore 1.5–2 mm.; ovary ellipsoid, 4–5 mm.; styles connate for 0.5 mm., style-arms 2 mm.; stigmas woolly-papillate, each ± 2.5 mm. in diameter..
