Erect shrub or small tree up to 4 m. Stalked glands absent, but sessile glands sometimes present on pods. Leaves often aggregated on abbreviated lateral shoots; petiole (0.5-)0.8-1.8 cm; lamina 0.8-2 x 1.2-3 cm, slightly emarginate or very shallowly lobed at the apex, cordate at the base, glabrous and glaucous. Stipules 1-3 x 1-2 mm. Flowers solitary or in fascicles of 1-3, borne on abbreviated lateral shoots; bracts c. 1 x 1-1.5 mm; pedicels 6-15 mm. Hypanthium 4-6 mm. Calyx 6-9 mm; lobes 3-4 mm, acute. Petals 1.5-2 x 0.6-0.8 cm, yellow to pinkish or red, with conspicuous dark reddish venation. Stamens 1.5-2.8 cm, red basally, green or yellowish-green towards the apex. Ovary 4-6 mm. Pods 2-3 x 1-1.5 cm, on a stipe 1-2 cm long, glandular or eglandular, pale yellowish-brown to pinkish-red. Seeds 5-7 x 4-5 mm.

Leaves alternate or clustered on dwarf lateral shoots, simple, thick, fleshy, wider than long, deeply notched apically, usually ± folded. Flowers tubular, with sepals and petals tightly furled, up to 25 mm long, dark maroon, petals greyish, streaked maroon, protruding from calyx, stamens exserted. Pod small, kidney-shaped, compressed.
