Characteristics

Erect to semi-procumbent herb to 1.3 m; stem fleshy, glabrous or sparsely pubescent, sometimes rooting from lower nodes.. Leaves petiolate, petiole 0.7–4 cm, blade ovate to rhomboid, 2–15(–22) cm long, 1–7(–12.5) cm wide, base attenuate to cuneate, sometimes forming narrow wings along petiole, margins crenulate to serrate, apex obtuse to acute, glabrous or sub-glabrous, 3-veined from base.. Inflorescence bracts 0.6–5 cm long at nodes of inflorescence branches.. Capitula few to numerous, ± 3–5 mm long, 4–5 mm diameter when mature; stalks of individual capitula 1.2–2.5 cm, glandular-pubescent; phyllaries 2–3 mm long, 0.5–0.75 mm wide, flat, apex obtuse to acute, margins entire or ciliate, basally pubescent.. Florets ± 30–42; corolla white, 1–1.5 mm long, basally wider, then narrowing into tube before expanding again into campanulate limb with 3–4(–5) (variable within capitulum) short, broadly triangular lobes; anthers free, 3–4(–5), ± 0.2 mm long; style ± 2 mm, bifid for 1/3 of its length, arms swollen.. Achenes 2.2–3 mm long, immature or aborted achenes purplish, generally smooth with small glands, becoming brown, tuberculate and glandular with maturity; pappus of 3 pegs, less than 1 mm long.
