Shrub, multi-stemmed, erect, 0.5–2 m high, with reddish brown smooth bark; stem glabrous to tomentose. Leaves opposite, rarely alternate and opposite, sessile to subsessile; lamina entire to very rarely lobed, lanceolate, ovate to broadly ovate, occasionally obovate, 3–12.5 cm long, 0.6–6 cm wide, acute to obtuse, usually acute; margin serrate to crenate or undulating, rarely entire; adaxial surface often glossy, lightly pubescent to glabrous, sometimes moderately pubescent; abaxial surface glabrous to tomentose; stipular glands usually present. Male conflorescences 3.5–25 cm long, crowded or sparse with uniflorescences, each uniflorescence with 3–12 buds or flowers; each flower subtended by 1 bract, triangular, 5–10 mm long, 3–8 mm wide, glabrous to pubescent, often ciliate; pedicels c. 2 mm long. Male flowers: sepals 4 (or 5), ovate, 5–6 mm long, 3–4 mm wide, with adaxial surface glabrous to glabrescent and abaxial surface glabrous to moderately pubescent; margin often ciliate. Female conflorescences 1–5 cm long, with each flower subtended by 1 bract; bracts triangular to ovate, 4–9 mm long, 4–6 mm wide, with adaxial surface glabrous, and abaxial surface glabrous to pubescent; margin often ciliate; pedicels 3–10 mm long. Female flowers: sepals 3–6, in 1 or 2 whorls, ovate, 3–12 mm long, 3–7 mm wide, adaxial surface glabrous and abaxial surface glabrous to pubescent; margin often ciliate; styles free to shortly connate at base.
