Characteristics

Perennials with much branched, tuberous base with short erect branches and with fibrous roots (rarely somewhat tuberous). Leaves obovate to almost orbicular, rarely broadly elliptic, 20-30(-55) x (15-)20-35(-40) mm, abruptly cuneate to subpetiolate, usually truncate, dorsiventrally flattened and with horny margin at apex, grey-green to grey and usually intensely spotted with purplish red. Inflorescence a thyrse with 1(2)-flowered cymes, grey; peduncle 0.1-0.2(-0.25) m long; pedicels 1.5-2.5 mm long. Buds terete, abruptly tapering towards apex, spreading. Calyx 1.5-2 mm long, grey tinged purplish red. Corolla with cylindrical tube 10-12.5 mm long, yellowish green tinged red; lobes broadly triangular, 1.5-2 mm long, cuspidate, rough and without trichomes, white to pale pink with purple mucro. Anthers protruding. Squamae square to transversely oblong, 0.6-1 x 1-1.3 mm, slightly emarginate, broadest just below apex.
