Characteristics

Dense bushy shrub 1.2–3.6 m. tall.. Stems at first pubescent, but bark soon flaking away in thin papery pieces to reveal a dark rusty brown powdery or granular layer beneath.. Leaves 40–60-foliolate; leaflets linear or narrowly linear-oblong, 4–7 mm. long, 0.8–1.5 mm. wide, acute and mucronulate at the apex, obliquely rounded at the base, rather thick, imbricated, pubescent or glabrescent, ciliate; main nerve curved but ± central; petiole and rhachis together 2.5–4 cm. long; petiolules very short; stipules elliptic-lanceolate, 8 mm. long, 1.8 mm. wide, acuminate, apiculate, not appendaged, striate, pubescent, at length deciduous.. Inflorescences axillary, short, not or scarcely exceeding the leaves, few-flowered; rhachis 2 cm. long; peduncle 1.5 cm. long; pedicels 5–6 mm. long; bracts narrowly ovate, 4–5 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, bifid, striate, pubescent, apparently persistent; bracteoles ovate-lanceolate, 5 mm. long, 1.8 mm. wide, acuminate, pubescent and ciliolate, persistent.. Calyx pubescent, 2-lipped, the lips ovate or oblong, 1.1–1.4 cm. long, 4–7 mm. wide, one 2-toothed, the other deeply 3-lobed.. Standard orange-yellow with brown veins, violin-shaped, 1.7–2 cm. long, 1–1.4 cm. wide; wings orange-yellow; keel-petals whitish, not laciniate.. Pod of 1 or usually 2 articles joined by a narrow neck; articles elliptic or almost semicircular, one margin almost straight, the other strongly curved, 6–7 mm. long, 5–6 mm. wide, compressed, glabrous, reticulate.. Seeds (immature) dark reddish-brown, elliptic-reniform, longest dimension 3.5 mm., shorter dimension 2.5 mm., 1 mm. thick; hilum small, round, eccentric.
