Leaves narrowly obovate, up to 50 × 9 cm., acuminate, base cordate-auriculate, often asymmetrical, glabrous, margin entire, scarious; nerves widely spaced, 9-11 per 5 mm. above and beneath; ligule rounded, coriaceous, glabrous, 1-2 mm. long; petiole very short or none; sheaths sulcate, glabrous.. Inflorescences arising from the base of a leafy shoot; peduncle 50-100 cm. tall, usually with 1-flowered distichously arranged subunits towards the apex, but sometimes bearing only a single terminal 1-2-flowered inflorescence; bracts oblong, chartaceous, glabrous, 7.5-8.5 × 2 cm., apex rounded, the uppermost bracts to 4.5 × 2.5 cm., broadly ovate, apex rounded, densely and minutely puberulous over the whole outer surface..
