Leaves with sheaths dark reddish brown, blades absent. Flowers: inflorescence pseudo-subterminal, dense, digitate cluster of spikelets ± 15-25 x 20-25 mm, overtopped by an erect, rigid, basal bract with a spine-like tip; spikelets light to dark brown; glumes with membranous margins, ovate, boatshaped, ± 2 mm long, dark brown; Oct.-Jan. Fruit a greyish nutlet, with a reticular surface pattern.
