Characteristics

Tree to 50 m tall. Bark smooth, purplish black or reddish purple to brown or grey brown, shedding in coarse scales. Twigs, leaves and cones sometimes glaucous when young. Leaves with petiole 1-2 mm long; lamina linear to elliptic, 3-7 cm long, 5-20 mm wide. Male cones usually distinctly stalked, cylindrical, 9-16 mm long, 4-7.5 mm diam., with 7-10 basal bracts and 200-500 scales; scales with 2-5 microsporangia. Female cones globular, 3.5-5.5 cm long, 3.5-5 cm diam., with 100-150 scales; largest scales 16-23 mm long, 23-30 mm wide.
