Tree to 50 m tall. Bark brown to grey-brown, shedding in coarse scales. Leaves with petiole 1-2 mm long; lamina linear to elliptic, 2-9 cm long, 5-25 mm wide. Male cones sessile or almost so, cylindrical, 11-16 mm long, 6-8 mm diam., with 8-10 basal bracts and 400-500 scales; scales with 2-5 microsporangia. Female cones globular to ovoid, 7.5-11.5 cm long, 6.5-10 cm diam., somewhat glaucous, with 160-210 scales; largest scales 26-35 mm long, 33-45 mm wide.
An emergent tree in lowland to mid-montane rainforest; at elevations from 400-1,100 metres. Found in a variety of rain forest habitats, though it tends to be close to the boundary of rain forest and wet sclerophyll forest.
