Small shrub, spreading and rather compact, to 1 m.; branchlets slightly compressed, soon terete, glabrous except in axils, lenticellate to varying degrees.. Leaves alternate; petiole 5–15 mm. long; lamina slightly fleshy, brownish to yellow-green, lanceolate to ovate-elliptic, 5–12 cm. long, 1.5–5 cm. wide, slightly acuminate to acute or obtuse at the apex, cuneate to rounded at the base, with 6–8 pairs of lateral nerves, the second–third ± strongly ascending.. Umbels several, sessile, with 2–4 flowers in sockets; bract cupular, 1–2 mm. long, lacerate, usually with a subulate erose limb 1–3 mm. long.. Receptacle 2 mm. long.. Calyx cupular, 2–3(–4 in fruit) mm. long, with distinct teeth 0.5–1 mm. long, ciliate, usually splitting unilaterally as the corolla expands.. Corolla 3–4 cm. long, tube red, lobes yellow over vents, with red to red-brown tips; apical swelling of bud slight, 5 mm. long, apiculate; basal swelling oblong-ellipsoid to globose-ellipsoid, 5–6 mm. long, 2.5–3 mm. in diameter; lobes erect, linear-oblanceolate in upper two-thirds to three-quarters, apiculate, 7–8 mm. long.. Filaments inflexed, yellow, the last 1 mm. hardened, paler, thickened; tooth 0.2–0.3 mm. long; anthers 2–3 mm. long.. Style slender, slightly expanded and red opposite the filaments, narrowed to a neck 2–3 mm. long; stigma capitate, 0.6–0.8 mm. across..
