Characteristics

Shrub to 1 m. or so; branchlets compressed to 4-angular, then terete, papillose-puberulous only around axils and sometimes on young internodes above, soon glabrescent, densely lenticellate.. Leaves alternate to opposite or ternate; petiole 1–6 mm. long; lamina coriaceous, green, narrowly oblong-elliptic to slightly lanceolate-or oblanceolate-oblong, 4–12(–15) cm. long, 1.5–2.5(–7) cm. wide, acute to obtuse at the apex, cuneate at the base, glabrous, obscurely penninerved, sometimes (varying on same branch) with basal or lower pair of nerves strongly ascending, with 6–10 pairs of lateral nerves.. Flowers clustered in axils or at old nodes, subsessile; bract cupular with small triangular limb, 3–4 mm. long, ciliolate.. Receptacle 1–1.5 mm. long.. Calyx tubular or funnel-shaped, 3–4 mm. long, shortly toothed, ciliolate.. Corolla (3.5–)4–4.5 cm. long, yellow or pale orange, banded green and then red below vents, whitish over vents, with red tips to lobes; apical swelling of bud slight, oblong to oblong-fusiform, 7 mm. long, 1.5 mm. in diameter; basal swelling 4–7 mm. long, 2.5–4 mm. in diameter, with tube narrowly constricted for 3–4 mm. above; lobes erect, 8–9 mm. long, with upper two-thirds linear-oblanceolate, pointed, slightly hardened inside.. Filaments red, slightly involute, slender, only slightly corrugated, with very short smooth pale hardened tip; anthers 1.8–2 mm. long.. Style red, greenish above, slender, slightly tapered to stigma; stigma ovoid to capitate, 0.7–1 mm. long.. Berry not seen.
