Shrublet; stems often short, 5–50 cm. long, simple or with short flowering branches, ultimately more bushy, frequently connected by subcortical runners; branchlets slightly compressed, soon terete, glabrous, usually sparsely lenticellate.. Leaves alternate, often little-developed at flowering time; petiole 1–10 mm. long; lamina thick, often reddish flushed, oblanceolate to obovate, 2.5–6(–9) cm. long, 1–3(–5) cm. wide, obtuse to rounded at the apex, attenuate at the base, 3–5-nerved from near the base (nerves sometimes obscure).. Umbels several, sessile, with 2–3 flowers in sockets; bract cupular, oblique, with a slight triangular limb, 1–2 mm. long.. Receptacle 1.5–2 mm. long.. Calyx cupular, 1.5–2.5 mm. long, split as the corolla-base expands.. Corolla 3.5–4.5 cm. long, tube red, lobes yellow over vents, with darker red to maroon tip; apical part of bud not swollen; basal swelling ellipsoid-globose, 3.5–5 mm. long, 3–3.5 mm. in diameter; lobes erect, slightly hardened in upper half, pointed, 8–10 mm. long.. Filaments inflexed, yellow, the last 1.5 mm. hardened, paler, thickened; tooth 0.3–0.5 mm. long; anthers 2.5–3.5 mm. long.. Style slender, slightly expanded opposite the filaments, narrowed to a neck 3–4 mm. long; stigma capitate, 0.8 mm. across..
