Characteristics

Tree 1.5–10 m tall, often unbranched. Indumentum of dark reddish brown stellate scales or hairs, densely covering twigs, petioles, rachis, petiolules, midrib of leaflets below, inflorescences and infructescences and calyces and fruits, sometimes numerous on lower leaflet surface. Leaves 46–84 cm long. Leaflets 11–15, 5–28 cm long, 2–8 cm wide; veins 11–23; reticulation barely or not visible. Inflorescences to 13 cm long. Flowers 3.5–5 mm long, 3 mm wide. Petals (2 or) 3, white or pale yellow. Staminal tube obovoid, c. 2 mm long and 2 mm wide; aperture c. 0.8 mm across; anthers 6, protruding through aperture. Infructescence 6–12 cm long. Fruit dehiscent, obovoid, 2.5–3.5 cm long, 2.5–3 cm wide. Locules 3, each with 0 or 1 seed. Seeds brown or blackish brown, 1.5–3 cm long, completely enclosed in an orange aril.
