Characteristics

Plant to 1 m high; tufts 1–6 cm across at base. Aerial stems simple or branched. Leaves ± folded towards base, 2–35 cm long; lamina ± flat, 1.5–11 mm wide, glabrous but often papillose; margin smooth or irregularly scabrous. Inflorescence few-to many-flowered; upper axes usually glandular-setose; bracts linear to subulate, 2–12 mm long; pedicels slender, 1–5 cm long, ascending. Perianth segments blue, 5-veined. Sepals ±linear, 1.6–2 cm long, usually glandular-setose outside, glabrous inside. Petals elliptic, 1.4–1.8 cm long, glabrous. Stamens 6–8 mm long; anthers 4–6.5 mm long, yellow-brown to black. Ovary to 2.5 mm long; style 3–5.5 mm long, green to blue. Capsule 4–7 mm wide. Seeds c. 2.5 mm long, granulate or smooth, shiny.
