Characteristics

Perennial tree, 5-10 m high. Leaves opposite, elliptic to elliptic obovate, shiny above, glabrous, leathery, base narrowly tapering, apex acute, margins entire, wavy; petioles stout, 2-4 mm long; stipules hairy, cup-shaped. Flowers in opposite panicles, bright red. Calyx: tube short, unequal 5-lobed, strongly accrescent. Corolla tubular, up to 30 mm long, 5-lobed, curved. Stamens 5, arising in upper part of corolla tube; anthers included, sessile, linear, with apical tail and obtuse, sagittate base, hairy on back. Disc annular. Ovary 2-locular, 10-ribbed; style long-exserted, stigma lobes 2, minute, filiform to elliptic. Flowering time Oct.-Mar. Fruit ovoid, 5 x 3 mm, crowned with 2 bright red, enlarged calyx lobes (wings).
