Characteristics

Tubers 1-2 cm in diam. Aerial leaves with petiole 13-25 cm; leaf blade lanceolate to broadly lanceolate or elliptic, 9-13 × 2.5-5 cm, sometimes larger, 5-7-veined, base cuneate, apex acute to acuminate. Panicles 15-45, in 3-6 whorls of 3-6 branches. Pedicel 1.5-2.5 cm. Sepals broadly ovate, 1.5-3.2 × 2-2.5 mm. Petals white or pinkish, suborbicular, 4-6.5 mm, larger than sepals, margin irregular. Anthers elliptic or oblong, 1-1.2 mm. Carpels regularly arranged; styles ± erect, 0.6-1 mm, equaling or shorter than ovary, stigmatose in upper 1/3-1/2 of their length. Achenes obovoid, 1.6-2(-3) mm, 1-grooved abaxially; lateral pericarp translucent, thin. Fl. and fr. Jun-Sep. 2n = 24, 26, 28.

Stems stout, erect, to 1 m high; rootstock short, stout. Leaves all basal, erect; laminae 7-23-(28) × (1)-2-5 cm, lanceolate, gradually tapering to subacute tip, gradually narrowed to long petiole. Inflorescence a much-branched panicle; branches whorled, ± straight, usually ascending, basally bracteate. Flowers usually pink, 1 cm diam., pedicels slender, bracteate; sepals ovate; petals ± acute. Achenes c. 20, c. 2.5 mm long, rounded, compressed, in a dense circular head; persistent style from above middle of inner edge of achene, curved in lower part, stigmatic portion occupying ½-⅔ of style-length.
Emergent erect aquatic, perennial, to 1 m high. Leaves: petiole to c. 80 cm long, flattened on one side and with small wings at base; blade lanceolate, to 25 cm long and 6.5 cm wide, tapering gradually into petiole, acute to acuminate, with up to 7 prominent parallel veins connected by numerous transverse veins. Inflorescence to 60 cm long, 40 cm wide. Flowers c. 9–10 mm diam. Sepals to 2 (–3.5) mm long. Petals to 4 (–6.5) mm long, white or pink. Carpels c. 20; style recurved in lower part. Achenes 2–2.5 mm long, falling singly.
Herbs, to 70 cm. Leaves emersed, petiolate; blade lanceolate, 6--23 ´ 1--4.5 cm. Inflorescences to 70 cm. Flowers chasmogamous; sepals 1.6--3 mm; petals purplish pink, 4.4--6.5 mm, margins ± erose, apex acuminate; anthers ellipsoid, 0.6--1.1 mm; style ± curved, 0.4--0.6 mm, equaling ovary length. Fruiting heads 4--8 mm diam; achenes obovoid, 2--2.9 mm, with 1--2 abaxial grooves, beak erect. 2n = 26, 28 (Eurasian material).
