Characteristics

Tree 18–36 m. tall, with blackish brown glabrous branches; bark smooth, slash exuding a yellow juice.. Leaf-blades narrowly oblong, 8–22 cm. long, 2–4.5 cm. wide, acuminate at the apex, acute or obtuse at the base, coriaceous, glabrous; midrib prominent beneath, the lateral nerves numerous, prominent on both faces, at right-angles to near margin and terminating in a submarginal nerve; secretory canals generally superimposed on the lateral nerves; petiole 1–2 cm. long, glabrous.. Male flower: pedicels 1–1.6 cm. long, glabrous; sepals green or greenish white, ± round, 0.8–1.3 cm. in diameter, glabrous; petals white or cream tinged pink, ± round, ± 1.5–2.5 cm. in diameter, glabrous; staminal bundles spade-shaped, 0.8–1 cm. long, 1–1.2 cm. wide, the claw 1 cm. long, 2.5 mm. wide, the anthers placed only on the internal face; disc with glands smooth, rugose above, or only slightly grooved.. Female flower: pedicel 2 cm. long; sepals and petals ± as in male; staminal bundles very reduced, ± 1.5 mm. long with a few subterrninal anthers; disc glands smooth; ovary 5-ribbed, glabrous with 2–4 ovules per locule; stigma 5-lobed.. Fruits ovoid or subconical, 5-ribbed, 9–20 cm. long, 7–12 cm. in diameter.. Seeds 15–20, ellipsoid, 3–5 cm. long, 1.5–3.2 cm. in diameter.. Fig. 3/5, 6.
