Characteristics

Low bushy perennial herb with entire alternate leaves. Inflorescence solitary, sessile, axillary, globular or very shortly ovoid, congested-cymose, bracteate; partial inflorescence basically of ultimate triads of a central fertile and 2 lateral sterile modified flowers formed of bracteoliform processes, but apparently variable and sometimes one modified flower absent or replaced by a second fertile flower; fruiting head possibly falling entire. Perianth-segments 5, decreasing in size inwards. Stamens 5, very short, the filaments delicate and monadelphous at the base, alternating with very short irregularly triangular pseudostaminodes; anthers minute, bilocular. Ovary with a single pendulous ovule, depressed-ovoid, glabrous; style short, bifid above with 2 linear stigmatal branches. Fruit a thin-walled capsule, rupturing irregularly. Seed compressed-ovoid; endosperm copious.
