Characteristics

Arborescent, 3-4 met. high, the stem simple, or branched low down or higher. Leaves densely rosulate, narrowly ensiform, gradually tapering to the apex, the youngest spreading, the oldest much recurved, with their apices almost touching the stem, fleshy and coriaceous, up to 80 cm long, 10-12 cm broad at base; upper surface green, without spots or lines, flat near base, deeply canaliculate upwards; lower surface convex; margins with a brownish-red edge armed with brownish-red pungent teeth 2-3 mm long, 10 mm distant, the teeth a little larger near base, smaller upwards. Inflorescence a many-branched panicle, branched and rebranched low down and bearing up to 20 racemes, the branches arcuate-erect, and sterile-bracteate. Peduncle deep brown, flattened at base, somewhat sulcate. Racemes densely capitate, about 8-10 cm long and broad, varying from slightly longer than broad to slightly broader than long, the apex rounded, the buds sub-erect, orange-red to red, the open flowers cernuous to pendulous, greenish-yellow to yellow, giving the racemes a distinctly bicoloured effect. Bracts ovate-acute, thin, scarious, 8-10 mm long and broad, 3-nerved. Pedicels 25 mm long. Perianth broadly cylindric-trigonous, somewhat ventricose, naviculate, with the mouth slightly upturned, about 25 mm long; outer segments free for about 18 mm (tube about 7 mm,), with 3 green nerves confluent at apex, the 2 upper segments closely grouped with their apices recurved, the lowest straighter; inner segments longer than the outer and with 3 congested nerves forming a slight keel. Filaments flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer. Anthers the 3 inner and 3 outer in turn exserted 15 mm Stigma at length exserted 15 mm.
