Characteristics

Succulent, perennial herb; caulescent. Stems short, up to 1 m long, usually simple, sometimes dividing at apex, procumbent, with many persistent dried leaves. Leaves with blade broadly ovate to narrowly ovate, ± 300 mm long, apex dry, terminating in very pungent spine; margins reddish brown, with deltoid, pale-tipped teeth, yellowish green, obscurely lineate. Flowers: inflorescence usually simple, erect, 1.0-1.5 m high, with cylindric, slightly acuminate, dense racemes; stamens and stigma well exserted; perianth 20-25 mm long, hidden by large bracts, pale lemon-coloured; Aug.-Oct.
