Characteristics

Plants stemless or often with a procumbent stem up to 1.50 m long, solitary or splitting up into 8-10 rosettes. Leaves rosulate, deltoid, acute, slightly falcate, to 40 cm long, to 8 cm broad at base, leathery; upper surface almost ventricose, flat or slightly convex, more or less striate, bright green shading into purplish; lower surface similar to the upper but often bearing white spots; margins cartilaginous, dark brown-red, armed with rigid, deltoid, sharp, dark brownish-red teeth, which are 2 mm long and 10-30 mm distant. Inflorescence up to 3 per rosette, up to 1.6 m high, simple or rarely forked. Peduncle basally plano-convex, up to 20 mm broad, terete above, covered with numerous deltoid, acute, sterile bracts, up to 25 mm long. Racemes up to 35 cm long, moderately dense, young buds covered by bracts; open flowers nutant. Bracts 12-20 mm long, 5-8 mm wide, ovate-deltoid, acute, fleshy, yellow-green, many-nerved. Pedicels terete, 15-22 mm long, always erect and almost hugging the peduncle. Perianth small, 10 mm long, 4 mm diam. at the middle, stipitate, narrowing to the mouth and tapering into the pedicel, yellowish-green: the outer segments free to the base, bearing 6-8 bright green, apically confluent, longitudinal nerves: the inner segments similar, but apparently narrower than the outer. Filaments yellowish; the orange anthers in turn exserted by 3 mm Style yellow, the stigma at length exserted by 4 mm. Ovary bright green. Capsule not seen.

Leaves ±76 cm a rosette, erect to arcuate-incurved, 250-400 x 50-80 mm, slightly biconvex, green to purplish, lower surface often white-spotted, margins cartilaginous, dentate. Inflorescence a cylindric, sub-dense raceme; peduncle 0.7-1.6 m long; bracts narrowly deltoid-acuminate, 12-20 x 4-8 mm, many-nerved. Flowers yellow-green, 10-12 mm long, cylindric; all segments free; pedicels 12-22 mm long. Anthers exserted 2-3 mm. Ovary bright green, ±3.0 x 1.5 mm; style exserted 2-4 mm. Fruit not seen.
