Characteristics

Plants acaulescent, shortly caulescent, or with stems rarely 1 met. long, usually in dense groups, the rosettes compact and erect, up to 60 cm diam., 40-50 cm high. Leaves about 20 to a rosette, lanceolate-attenuate, up to 30 cm long, 9 cm broad low down; upper surface flat to slightly canaliculate near apex, glaucous-green, sometimes with a reddish tinge, without lines or spots; lower surface convex, somewhat obtusely carinate in upper half, the keel armed with up to 6 prickles which are larger near apex, smaller downwards, and similar to the marginal teeth; margins armed with broad pale brown teeth springing from a whitish base, the teeth 2-3 mm long, 10-15 mm distant, more or less isolated and not joined by a horny edge, the interspaces straight to slightly rounded. (Leaf sap dries deep orange.) Inflorescence a panicle, 80 cm.-1 met. high, 3-8-branched from about the middle, 3-5 being the most frequent. Peduncle not sterile-bracteate below the first branch, but branches below racemes clothed with a few scattered, ovate-acuminate sub-amplexicaul thin dry white 3-4-nerved sterile bracts which are about 15 mm long, 7 mm broad at base. Racemes densely flowered, up to 15 cm long, 9-10 cm broad, usually longer than broad, rounded at apex or sometimes broadly conical. Pedicels slender, the lowest 30-35 mm long, gradually slightly shorter upwards. Bracts ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, thin, sub-scarious, rather white, up to 7 mm long, 3 mm broad at base, 3-nerved. Perianth 35-40 mm long, dull scarlet, cylindric-trigonous, slightly curved, enlarging a little in upper two-thirds, the mouth usually wide open, shortly stipitate at base and tapering into the pedicel; outer segments free to base or almost so, with 3 nerves confluent at apex, the apices sub-acute, slightly spreading; inner segments free, broader than the outer, with a keel the colour of the perianth, and with more obtuse more spreading apices. Anthers exserted up to 5 mm, the filaments lemon. Stigma at length exserted 5 mm. Ovary 8 mm long, 2-5 mm diam., green. Flowers from September to December according to locality.
