Characteristics

Plant succulent, with up to 50 stems in tufts, the stems up to 15 cm long, covered with the dry remains of old leaf bases: Leaves about 20, multifarious, narrowly linear-attenuate, erectly spreading, about 35 cm long, 10 mm broad low down, the sheathing articulate part enlarging to about 25 mm wide; upper surface flat to sub-canaliculate not spotted; tower surface convex, with numerous small while spots near base: both surfaces dull green; margins with a very narrow cartilaginous white edge armed with firm white teeth 0.5-1 mm long, 2-5 mm distant, usually larger near base smaller upwards. Inflorescence capitate, simple, about 35 cm high. Peduncle flattened low down, brownish, clothed from about the middle upwards with several ovate-acuminate scarious brownish sterile bracts up to 20 mm long, 10 mm broad, about 5-nerved. Raceme capitate, about 4 cm long, 8 cm diam., about 20-flowered. Bracts lowest up to 15 mm long, 3 mm wide, narrowly ovate-acuminate, thin scarious brownish, 3-5-nerved. Pedicels green, lowest up to 20 mm long. Perianth yellow, 18 mm long, cylindric-trigonous slightly clavate, very shortly stipitate at base; outer segments free to base, with 3 greenish nerves confluent at apex, the apices slightly spreading; inner segments free to base (not cohering to the outer), broader than the outer, slightly carinate, the keel yellowish. Filaments lemon-yellow, flattened, the 3 inner narrower and lengthening in advance of the 3 outer. Anthers the 3 inner and 3 outer in turn exserted 3-4 mm Stigma at length exserted up to 7 mm. Ovary green, 4 mm long, 2 mm diam. Flowering July to September after veld fires followed by rain.

Much-branched, short-stemmed grass aloe 300-400 mm tall, forming dense tufts; roots fusiform. Leaves ±51 cm a rosette, linear, 70-375 x 2-10 mm, D-shaped in section, margins dentate. Inflorescence a simple capitate raceme; peduncle 250-350 mm long, with sterile bracts; bracts ovate-deltoid, ±15 x 3-4 mm, 3-5-nerved. Flowers lemon-yellow, 13-18 mm long; pedicels 13-20 mm long; all segments free to base. Anthers exserted 2-4 mm. Ovary 2-4 x 1.5-2 mm, green; style exserted up to 7 mm.
